Holistic Management Intensive - March 2024
This 10-day immersive experience is designed for someone who wants to learn the whole of Holistic Management in one session. This unique framework builds your understanding of the whole you are working within and guides you in developing a context appropriate pathway to management for ecological, economic, and community health. Get Hands-on! You'll participate in a variety of seed preparations, harvest cuttings and prepare them for propagation, and make root divisions. Through our in-field practicum, you'll learn how to support these newly propagated plants through soil mixes, care, and repotting.

As the first botanic garden in the nation to focus exclusively on native plants, Santa Barbara Botanic Garden has dedicated nearly a century of work to better understand the relationship between plants and people. Growing from 13 acres in 1926 to today’s 78 acres, the grounds now include more than 5 miles of walking trails, an herbarium, a seed bank, research labs, a library, and a public native plant nursery. Amid the serene beauty of the Garden, teams of scientists, educators, and horticulturists remain committed to the original spirit of the organization’s founders – conserve California native plants and habitats to ensure they continue to support life on the planet and can be enjoyed for generations to come.
About the Facilitator: Alejandro Lemus, Horticultural Educator at SB Botanic Garden
As the Garden’s horticultural educator, Alejandro develops and implements horticultural education programs for residential gardeners and professional landscapers. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he has fond memories of helping his family with their landscaping business. Gardening has instilled Alejandro’s appreciation and curiosity for the natural world, whether pulling weeds or stumbling upon new insect friends.
Alejandro graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a bachelor’s degree in biology with a focus in ecology and evolutionary biology. He has worked for land trusts, nature centers, and native plant nurseries, advocating California native plants. Alejandro comes to the Garden with experience in habitat restoration, landscaping, native plant nursery management, propagation, and education.

Join us for a new workshop topic of our “All Hands On” Program series!
Take a deep dive into the world of trail planning and building. Learn how to read a landscape, identify issues areas posed by water, soil, ecology, and more; and the various factors that play into creating a trail (or rural road) that will reduce the maintenance in the future and allow it to lie easier on the land. Discover the tools needed both in the planning process and for the construction of dirt paths that will last generations and improve the health of a property. This workshop is designed for land stewards interested in: agrotourism, fire abatement corridors, conscious access across properties, and restoration of historic roads, trails, and environments. .
This workshop features guest facilitator Dillon Osleger of Sage Trails Alliance, alongside the WBLT team.

This course will take place both in the classroom and out on the land at Jalama Canyon Ranch to understand what to look for and how to build a trail system on a property. Part of our day will be out on the ranch working on drainage work that can be replicated on other landscapes.
About Our Facilitator:
Dillon found his footing in rural agriculture and recreation quite literally. Growing up amidst cattle pastures and on trails in Northern California, Dillon learned the importance of the intersection of humans and nature through observation and hands-on experience. Professionally, he has spent over a decade in trail & rural road design and construction, along with land management, restoration, use and planning. Dillon has worked as a soil scientist and range land ag professional for the Nature Conservancy under SNAPP national partnerships, for the National Park Service as a restoration ecologist & hydrologist, as a geology consultant, for the USFS as a trails manager, and now heads Sage Trail Alliance - a Santa Barbara based nonprofit dedicated to sustainable trail design, public lands trail maintenance, agrotourism, and equitable access across Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Above all, Dillon works to enact successful projects along California's Central Coast to act as models for state and federal emulation.

Ecological Outcome Verification™ (EOV™) Course
Ecological Outcome Verification Training Course with Jackie Eshelman of UVE
April 12-16, 2023 | The Center for Regenerative Agriculture at Jalama Canyon Ranch, CA
THIS COURSE IS PART OF THE ACCREDITATION REQUIREMENTS FOR BECOMING AN EOV MONITOR AS PART OF THE SAVORY INSTITUTE.
Join us for this 5-day training at the beautiful Jalama Canyon Ranch on monitoring ecological outcomes as part of the EOV platform through the Savory Institute and become an accredited monitor. Monitors are in high demand across the US!
Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) is the “science inside” Savory Institute’s Land to Market program. Land to Market (L2M) is a unique sourcing solution that connects conscientious buyers, brands and retailers directly to farms and ranches that are verified to be regenerating their land. EOV is the protocol used to verify farms and ranches so that they are eligible for the L2M program.
DETAILS
Cost: $1,500 USD (Includes 3 locally sourced, delicious meals a day, instruction, and materials)
Upon registration, a non-refundable deposit of $500 will be collected to secure your spot in the course.
Lodging: Tent and car camping is available onsite for $25/night, and shared cabin stays are available on site for $75/night. The shared cabin stays are on a first-come, first-serve basis. If onsite cabins fill up, we do have a partner with offsite cabins that can be reserved for a different cost per night.
The Course
This course will cover:
Creating a monitoring plan
Conducting short-term monitoring
Establishing and reading long-term monitoring
Plant ID and recording
Photo documentation
Data entry and report writing.
In the past year, there have been significant updates and improvements to the monitoring protocol that create a more robust body of data. Some of the changes include a random, stratified soil sampling methodology. These changes have also shifted planning procedures and the number of monitoring sites per land base. Whether you have had some monitor training in the past or you are new to the EOV monitoring protocol, anyone who is interested in providing EOV monitoring services must take an accredited EOV monitor training course.
Finalizing Your Accreditation
After the 5-day training, and in order to become an accredited EOV monitor, you will need to assist in the installation of 2 additional baseline monitoring events, enter the data and photos into the EOV platform, and create reports for the land stewards. There will be plenty of opportunities to install baseline EOV with the instructor in various places across California, Oregon, and Washington. For those that are interested in taking that step, we will organize the schedule during the training event.
This 1:1 Field Training is a separate cost from the EOV training course and can be taken care of directly through the instructor and the UVE Savory hub. The Cost for this is $450 and you will be invoiced by UVE for this.

Lead Facilitator:
Jackie Eshelman is a Savory Accredited Educator, EOV™ Hub Verifier, and EOV Program Lead at UVE Hub in Northern California. Jackie became an Accredited Professional Educator with the Savory Institute in 2019. Through her work in EOV, she finds herself in the privileged position of traveling the western US visiting with farmers and ranchers, monitoring a vast range of landscapes and ecoregions. Relationship, empathy, and care are at the core of her work. Jackie strives to meet land stewards where they are, in any stage of their regenerative journey, to work together to make holistic management decisions at the soil surface.

Jesse Smith is the Director of Land Stewardship of White Buffalo Land Trust and is guiding the development of the flagship farm, as well as working with the team, contractors, and partners to grow the land under our management, and the impact in our community. Jesse brings years of experience in landscape design and basemap development, as well as visual communications design.

Take a deep dive into understanding how land works as a whole living system, and discover powerful tools and planning approaches for assessing and designing a piece of land, including climate, water, geology, soils, ecological communities, and much more. Experience a land-based design process, conduct site assessment in the field, and learn to organize data, research, and insights from site assessment to guide your land stewardship. This workshop features guest facilitator Connor Stedman from Terra Genesis International, alongside the WBLT team.

This course will take place both in the classroom and out on the land at Jalama Canyon Ranch to understand what to look for when planning for land stewardship. Learn how to interpret many different dimensions of an ecosystem to ensure that considerations are made for the land as a whole and discover how to see and understand the impacts of decisions you make on the land. You will leave this course understanding how to interpret plan view maps of a property, sources of information on land properties, and digital tools and resources to support your land planning process.
