The Elderberry Project:
Climate Smart Production and Market Development

Why Elderberries?

Expanding the production of elderberries in the Western U.S. presents an opportunity to demonstrate climate-smart growing practices, meet growing market demand, support small farmers to increase their economic viability, and reduce carbon emissions.

This project is funded by the USDA’s Partnerships in Climate Smart Commodities.

For Producers:

We will begin enrolling producers interested in growing the Western Blue Elderberry as a climate-smart crop as of September 2023.

Practices to be implemented on enrolled landscapes:

  • Hedgerow Planting

  • Riparian Forest Buffer

  • Silvopasture

  • Compost Application

  • Conservation Cover

  • Cover Crop

  • Mulching

Each of our producer partners will work with and receive technical support from White Buffalo Land Trust and the Community Environmental Council to design, implement, and verify these growing systems.
